East Of Scotland Girls' Champion 2013 - Joanne Free

Finalists, Catherine Goodwin and Joanne Free

The final of this year’s Championship was between Catherine Goodwin, Glenbervie, and Joanne Free, Gullane. Unfortunately the weather deteriorated in the afternoon and the whole final was played in very wet conditions. However the girls played amazing golf in spite of the rain.

Joanne won the 1st when Catherine three putted after a great approach shot. At the 3rd, Catherine played an excellent shot from near the out of bounds, onto the green and won the hole to square the match. The fourth was halved, then at the fifth Joanne’s ball went out of bounds and Catherine won the hole with a par to go 1 up. After Catherine’s ball found a difficult lie in a bunker at the par 3 6th, Joanne played a lovely shot into the middle of the green and the match was square again. The 7th was a long hole into the wind, which Joanne won to go 1 up. The 8th and 9th were halved.

Joanne went 2 up for the first time at the par 5 10th. Both girls missed the green at the 11th but pitched and putted for par 3’s. Catherine won the 13th to cut Joanne’s lead to 1up then squared the match at the 15th when Joanne’s teeshot went out of bounds. At the 16th, girls drove to the right of the green, Joanne had a difficult pitch which she left short, Catherine pitched on safely and 2 putts secured a par to win the hole and go 1up. The 17th was halved in par 5s. Joanne had a long drive at the 18th, played an excellent fairway shot then a good pitch and putt to secure a birdie 4 to square the match. At the first extra hole, both girls had good drives but Catherine had a tight line to the green, clipped a tree and had to play a full shot to get on the green, Joanne’s second found the green and 2 putts secured her par and victory. Congratulations to both girls on their excellent golf and for giving us such an exciting match to watch.

Our thanks to Christine Sikora, President of Stirling & Clackmannan, for her support during the two days of the competition and for announcing the girls on the tee. Thanks also to Midlothian Captain, Sheila Stuart, for refereeing the final. We appreciate the support of the East Division officials throughout the year.

Thank you to Braehead Golf Club for the courtesy of the course for our Summer Meeting and Championship and for giving us such a warm welcome. The course was challenging and in excellent condition – thank to Elizabeth Goodwin, Stirling & Clackmannan Junior Secretary for arranging this year’s event.

Thank you to all the girls who played and to all the parents who brought them. It was a great two days!

East of Scotland Girls' Champion 2012 - Lauren Whyte

Finalists, Hannah Scott and Lauren Whyte

Thank you to Mandy for the following match report:

'On a cold but dry autumn morning at Murrayfield Golf Club, Edinburgh, the final of the East of Scotland Girls' Championship between Hannah Scott of Broomieknowe and Lauren Whyte of St Regulus started with some steady golf as both girls halved the first two holes with pars. At the tricky par 5, third hole, Hannah was the first to take the lead with another par. Lauren quickly fought back winning the fourth hole. However Hannah then won the next two holes to be two up playing the seventh which was halved again in pars.  After Hannah finding the bunker on the eight and misjudging her pitch onto the ninth the two holes were taken by Lauren to take the match to all square after nine holes.

After Hannah missing the green at the short 10th hole and Lauren's two good shots to hit the eleventh green in two to set up a birdie, Lauren went two up. After two steady holes which were halved Lauren stepped up a pace by taking the fourteenth hole with a birdie to go three up. The fifteenth was then halved with two good birdies. After two good drives up the sixteenth hole Hannah playing first played a good shot pin high onto the green however Lauren followed with an equally good shot. Hannah putting first really needed to sink the putt but just missed,Lauren then finished the match by sinking her putt for another birdie and to take the title by winning the match by 4 and 2.

Well done to both girls who not only played good golf today but have each had an excellent season of golf.'

Thank you to Murrayfield Golf Club for courtesy of the course for today's final and also for the Summer Meeting and earlier stages of the Championship.

East District retain SLGA Girls' Inter Divisional Championship Trophy

Missing from photo is Maggie.

Congratulations to the East District team of Jessica and Emily Dalgetty (Glencorse),Catherine Goodwin (Glenbervie), Charlotte Munro (Gullane), Hannah Scott (Broomieknowe),and Alexandra Tait (St Regulus) for retaining the SLGA Girls' Inter Divisional Championship Trophy over the weekend at Ballumbie Castle Golf Club,  Dundee.

On Saturday morning they played steady golf to beat the North District team by 2 games to 1. However, the afternoon match against the South Team was more of a battle. Determined to win, the second pairing of Jessica and Catherine pulled out a birdie on the last hole to win by 1 hole and in the final pairing of Alexandra and Charlotte, Alexandra played the shot of the day, pin high, onto a two tiered 18th green, to allow Charlotte to hit a great putt to secure them of a 1 hole victory.

Going into Sunday and the final day of play, East District team found themselves up against the West Team who also had won both their matches on the first day. So it was all to play for between the two teams.
Jessica and Catherine after playing so well on the first day lost their match by 7&5. However, it was not long until East District got a win from Alexandra and Charlotte winning by 6&4. So now the match was all square, both teams having won a game. Hannah and Emily having been well down managed to pull it back to all square at the 16th. The 17th was then halved after a fantastic bunker shot and putt from Emily.  Hannah then hit a great drive down the 18th allowing Emily to play a match winning shot six feet from the pin which was the followed by a birdie putt from Hannah to give them the game and secure the match against the West and also to take the championship.

Well done girls !

Unfortunately on Saturday evening Maggie took unwell so unfortunately missed all the exciting play on Sunday. We do wish her well and thank her for all her support and hard work to the run up to the competition.
