SLGA Scottish Girls

Maggie and I would just like to wish all the East Girls who are playing in the Girls Scottish at Eyemouth next week all the very best. Play well and enjoy !

Championship match report

With thanks to Maggie here is a full match report of the championship final !

Rachel went up in the match with a birdie at the 2nd and then won the 3rd and 6th. Alison fought back by winning the seventh and then holed a great putt for a birdie 2 at the challenging short hole 8th where Rachel just lipped out for her birdie. After an excellent approach shot, Alison squared the match at the 9th.

After Rachel winning the 10th, Alison again squared the match with a birdie 4 at the 11th. Rachel again edged ahead and although her first putt at the 14th went 8ft past the hole, she holed the return to go 2 up. At the long 15th Rachel holed from just off the green for an eagle 3 which gave her a three-hole lead. Alison won the 16th to take the match to the 17th, which was halved in 3 to give Rachel a 2/1 win and the championship title.

Congratulations to both girls on an exciting final, played in the best of spirits, it was a pleasure to watch.

Thank you to all who supported and watched the girls over the two days at Haddington. It is most encouraging to see so much talent in the East of Scotland Girls.

The first of the semi-final matches saw Alison beating Gillian Simpson (Murrayfield) by 3&2. In the other semi, Rachel and Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe) had a very good battle which ended on the 18th where Kate missed a short putt giving Rachel a place in the final.

Our sincere thanks go to Haddington Golf Club for kindly allowing us courtesy of course to play both the Summer Meeting and Championship and for their very kind hospitality in the Clubhouse. We would also like to thank Dawn Young for her kind help as starter for the Summer Meeting

East Division Girls come so close to winning at Ballumbie again !

From left to right, Lauren Whyte, Alexis Hutton,Tiffiny Wood, Nicola Taylor, Shannen McGuire and our brilliant Captain Alison Goodwin

After a very tense and exciting finish to the SLGA Girls Inter-Divisional matches at Ballumbie Castle, Dundee, the West and North District teams were level with two wins apiece. The tie-breaker was the number of holes up in individual games played throughout the competition.
Congratulations to the West team who came out top with (+20) against the North on (+9).

Well done to all the East girls who put up a tremendous fight right to the end. It really did come down to the last hole played on the 18th in the last match. Nicola Taylor and Alexis Hutton were all square against their North opponents , however Alexis's drive unluckily found an old divot just lying into the second cut of rough and unfortunately they lost the hole to give the North a win against us.

Just a note but, if you count up the number of holes up, won by the East team from the full results below you will see it adds up to (+23 ) , so overall they played some great golf . Well done girls !

We must say thanks to Tiffiny who stood in at the last moment as reserve. Well done Tiffiny you played some great golf. Sam,we hope your back is OK !

I would just like to take the chance on behalf of the East Girls to thank Liz Jones (Fife) for very kindly helping and supporting us throughout the weekend.

Rachel Hanlon East Girls' Champion 2009

Championship Final - Match Report

With our thanks to Maggie here is a detailed report of this years exciting Final :-

Rachel won the 1st but Kate levelled at the 2nd. Kate then went one ahead at the fourth. Rachel won the 6th but Kate again went one ahead at the 7th with a birdie 3. At the eighth Rachel’s drive found the trees but she managed to save par and win the hole when Kate bogeyed. The match was all-square at the turn.

At the eleventh Rachel won with a birdie 2 to go one up. She remained so until the 14th when she went another one ahead however Kate immediately fought back by winning the 15th. The 16th and 17th were halved.

With Rachel one up, Kate’s drive found the trees and she had a difficult approach shot which nearly reached the green. However with Rachel close in two, Kate eventually conceded the hole and Rachel won the match by 2 holes.

Congratulations to both girls on an exciting, final which was a pleasure to watch

Rachel Hanlon survives a closely contested final to become the new East Girls' Champion

Rachel Hanlon ( St Regulus ) took the title of the East of Scotland Girls' Champion today at Kingsknowe Golf Club, Edinburgh after beating Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe) in a very close final. On a day that once again was threatened with heavy rain and thunder storms the girls produced some excellent golf.

The first of the morning semi - final matches saw Rachel sink a good number of birdie putts to beat Alison Goodwin (Glenbervie) by 6/4. Kate in the other semi-final match was up against Gabrielle Macdonald(Craigielaw) who has been in very good form recently. Kate found herself 4 up with 4 holes to play , however Gabrielle had a good fight back winning the 15th and 16th however could not keep that up and Kate took the match on the 17th.

A full match report of the final, with photos, will follow shortly.

In the meantime our sincere thanks must go to Kingsknowe Golf Club for their very kind hospitality and allowing us courtesy of the course to play both the Summer Meeting and Championship. Thanks also must go to the Kingsknowe Lady members who volunteered their help and to Liz Jones whose help for most of the day was greatly appreciated.

The first round of the Championship got underway after the completition of the Summer Meeting. The top eight scratch scores, available to play, went forward to compete in the first round matches in the afternoon. Thunder storms threatened but luckily everyone got finished without getting wet or being called off the course due to thunder & lightning.

Kirsty Simpson who took the Overall Net Prize in the Summer Meeting qualified in eight place and faced Rachel Hanlon top qualifier and winner of the Summer Meeting Scratch Prize. Kirsty who had her big sister Gillian on the bag put up a great fight, played some fantastic golf but unfortunately Rachel managed to find birdies when Kirsty was having some good pars . Rachel will now go forward looking to take the East Girls Championship Title for the first time.
Second qualifier, Gabrielle Macdonald played steady golf to beat Hannah Scott by 5&4, Kate McIntosh played equally well to beat Nikki Taylor by 3&2 and Alison Goodwin who was 4 up at one point in her match against Sam Munro managed a win on the 18th hole to go into the semi finals which tee off tomorrow morning from 9.30am.

As the end of the season approaches....

As the end of the season approaches I personally would like to firstly thank all the girls for supporting the ESGGA by playing in the competitions and for representing the East Girls in the matches against the West and the South Girls. It has been a great year and both Maggie and I look forward to seeing you all next year.

Secondly , a big thank you to all the parents for supporting the girls .

Here's just a wee story to emphasise what parents have to do , or go through to allow the girls to play the game of golf !!!

An ESGGA Mum who probably would like to remain unnamed took her children who are all golfers to their prizegiving. On their way home the family took a short cut across the golf course , in the dark . The Mum unfortunately found a bunker to fall into. The family had a chuckle to themselves and upon reaching home asked the question
' Mum , did you remember to rake the bunker ?'

So to all the Mums & Dads who make lots of scarifices for their children - A Very Big Thankyou !

Girls - Keep up the practice in the winter.

See you next year.

Mandy

Thank you Maggie !
Well done also to Gillian Simpson who was a close runner up with 51 points.

Nicola Taylor from Thornton was also presented yesterday with a voucher for having the best aggregate two nett scores from the ESGGA Spring, Summer and Autumn Meetings. Well done Nicky.

Rachael Watton of Mortonhall, won the East Girls' Championship today beating Gabrielle Macdonald of Craigielaw in the Final by 4&3. To reach the final Rachael beat Nicola Taylor of Thornton by 2 holes and Gabrielle beat Gillian Simpson of Murrayfield on the 19th hole. The conditions the girls had to play in all day could not have been any worse. It never stopped raining all day.

With thanks to Maggie here is a match report of the final.

' The standard of golf was excellent throughout the final in spite of heavy rain and very wet conditions underfoot.
Gabrielle won the first but Rachael got back on level terms with a birdie at the 2nd. Rachael edged ahead by winning holes 4&5 but Gabrielle had a birdie at the 8th to reduce the deficit to one. Rachael was 1 up at the turn.
Rachael won the 10th with a birdie 3 and then went 3 up at the short 11th . The next two holes were halved. Gabrielle lost the 14th after trouble off the tee which meant a penalty shot and she eventually conceded the hole for Rachael to go 4 up.
At the par 3 15th both girls had excellent tee shots over the burn to the green. Rachael secured her par however Gabrielle just missed a birdie 2 for the match to continue.
Well done to both girls for playing such good golf. Rachael is a worthy champion.

We would like to thank Craigmillar Park Golf Club for the courtesy of the course for our Championship this year. We are grateful for all the help we received in rearranging the matches which had to be postponed earlier in the month.

Well done to all the girls who played in this year's championship and thanks to all the parents and supporters who watched today in such unpleasant conditions.

Weather delayed Championship !

With thanks to the good old Scottish summer weather the East Girls's Championship was abandoned due to thick fog/mist. The Summer Meeting had been delayed for four hours and as a result only 8 holes of the first match play rounds were played. The girls arrived the following morning only to find the course unplayable . It was agreed by everyone that the girls would complete their first round ties in their own time and a new date would be set for the semi-finals and final.
